18: Dagbok fra maidagene (1/6)

Sverre Ottar Faanes satt som fange på Falstad fra 27. oktober 1944 til frigjøringen i 1945. Under fangenskapet førte han dagbok, og notatene hans gir oss et unikt innblikk i livet bak piggtråden i siste del av leirhistorien.

Denne uken publiserer vi dag for dag Faanes' notater fra maidagene 1945.

2. mai 1945:

"Onsdag: Været er ypperlig, og fortsatt ryktene mange. Bl[ant]anna Hitlers død, ja dette er ikke rykte [men] den nøkne virkelighet. Tysk melding forteller at han døde i går 1ste mai kl. 4. Så 1ste mai blir altså en merkedag (stor dag like vel). Ja så ryktene. Røde Kors skal overta leiren, hirden avvæpnet, danske konge vendt tilbake, tilbaketrekning fra de danske øier, Berlin, Lybekk og Rostokk falt, og kvislingregjeri[ngen] gått. Det er blitt disig i middagstia, men om ettermiddagen i 3tia blir det en herlig solvarme, og vi har tillpassett og får ettermiddagens arbeid etter denne tid. Og vi går i seng kl. 10, med stadig større forventninger om at fredskl[okkene] snart vill slå. Ja en ting glemte jeg i dag ettermiddag fikk 21 mann fri og forlot leiren, samtlige fra Kvisvik og Tingvoll."

Sverre Ottar Faanes was prisoner at Falstad from October 27th 1944 tothe Liberation in 1945. During his imprisonment he kept a diary, and his notes gives us unique insight into the life behind barbed wire in last part of the camp history.

This week we publish Faanes' day by day notes of the week before the Liberation.

May 2nd, 1945:

"Wednesday: The weather is excellent, and the rumours are still many. Among other things the death of Hitler, yes this is no rumour [but] pure reality. A German message tells that he died yesterday May 1st at 4pm. So May 1st will be a day of celebration (important day anyway). Then the rumours. The Red Cross will take over the camp, the Hird (paramilitary army of the Norwegian Nazi Party) is disarmed, the Danish king has returned, withdrawal from the Danish islands. Berlin, Lübeck, and Rostock have fallen, and the Quisling government has resigned. It is getting hazy around midday, but around 3pm the weather turns warm and sunny. We go to bed around 10pm, with increasing expectations that the Liberty bells soon will toll. I forgot to write one thing, this afternoon 21 men from Kvisvik and Tingvoll were released and left the camp."
